Focus on Healthcare and High-Demand Sectors
Healthcare continues to be a strong focus for Alberta, with two draws targeting the Dedicated Health Care Pathway. These included both Express Entry and non-Express Entry candidates, showing Alberta’s ongoing commitment to tackling healthcare labour shortages. Altogether, 71 ITAs were issued to healthcare professionals.
In addition, three draws were conducted under the Alberta Express Entry Stream, specifically for candidates working in priority sectors such as aviation, agriculture, and construction. These sectors are considered vital to Alberta’s economic development and long-term workforce planning.
Interestingly, this marks the first time in 2025 that Alberta has targeted construction workers in a draw, highlighting the province’s recognition of skilled trades as a critical need.
Rural Renewal Stream Sees Strong Activity
The Rural Renewal Stream had the largest draw of this round, issuing 165 invitations on 5 May 2025. This stream aims to attract newcomers to smaller towns and rural communities across the province—areas that often struggle to retain and recruit skilled labour.
This was the second-highest number of invitations issued in a single draw under this stream in 2025, with the highest being 190 earlier in the year. Clearly, Alberta is making a strong push to support growth in its rural economies.
Alberta’s 2025 Nomination Allocation: A 50% Cut
For 2025, Alberta has been given 4,875 nomination spaces by the federal government—a stark contrast to the 9,750 allocations in 2024. This significant reduction of 50% means Alberta must be even more strategic in selecting candidates who align with its economic priorities.
Despite the cut, Alberta continues to issue nominations across its most impactful streams. The latest available data from the AAIP sheds light on how these allocations are being used so far this year.
