What You’ll Be Doing Day-to-Day

This is a hands-on role where you’ll be actively involved in the day-to-day care and maintenance of various plant types, from seedlings to mature trees. Daily responsibilities include:

  • Harvesting seedlings and transplanting rooted cuttings
  • Pruning trees, shrubs, and perennials
  • Mixing and preparing soil for planting
  • Planting seeds, bulbs, and potting/re-potting plants
  • Applying fertilizers, insecticides, and fungicides as needed
  • Monitoring plant health and reporting signs of pests or disease
  • Greenhouse cleaning and maintenance
  • Operating climate control systems
  • Performing general weeding and watering duties
  • Maintaining tidy and organized work areas

You’ll also be expected to complete basic progress reports and assist in wrapping rootballs for transport. It’s a physically active job that keeps you moving and engaged throughout the day.

Who We’re Looking For

If you’re reliable, hard-working, and have a genuine interest in plants and nature, you’ll fit right in. Here’s what Countryside Garden Center is looking for in a candidate:

  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written
  • Completed high school (Secondary School Graduation Certificate)
  • 1–2 years of experience in a nursery, greenhouse, or similar setting
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a team-oriented mindset
  • Reliable and detail-oriented with good hand-eye coordination

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This role involves working primarily outdoors in rural Alberta, so you’ll need to be comfortable with a variety of weather conditions — from hot summer days to damp, chilly mornings. Other physical requirements include:

  • Long hours standing, bending, crouching, and kneeling
  • Repetitive tasks and handling heavy loads
  • Fast-paced environment with a significant workload

Steel-toed safety boots are required for the job, and since there’s no public transportation nearby, you’ll also need your own vehicle and a valid driver’s licence.

What You’ll Be Working With

Countryside Garden Center specializes in a wide range of plants and trees. You’ll gain hands-on experience with:

  • Coniferous and deciduous trees
  • Fruit trees and berry bushes
  • Ornamental trees and hedges
  • Perennials, cut flowers, and seasonal plants

Experience operating garden tractors, chain saws, forklifts, irrigation systems, light trucks, and mechanical sprayers is a huge plus and will set you up for success in this role.
