Alberta invites 1,051 candidates in May draws
Between May 1 and May 13, 2026, Alberta conducted four immigration draws through the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP), issuing a combined 1,051 invitations to provincial nomination candidates.
The invitations were distributed across multiple targeted pathways, including streams focused on healthcare workers, technology professionals, and candidates intending to settle in rural communities.
These draws form part of Alberta’s ongoing 2026 immigration activity, bringing the total number of provincial selection rounds this year to 36.
- Four AAIP draws held from May 1 to May 13, 2026
- 1,051 total invitations issued across all draws
- Alberta Opportunity Stream accounted for 832 invitations
- Healthcare and tech pathways continued to receive targeted draws
- Minimum selection scores ranged between 50 and 57
- More than 6,200 total invitations issued in 2026 so far

Details of May 2026 AAIP draws
The province selected candidates through four distinct immigration pathways during the early May period, with each draw targeting specific labour market needs.
The largest draw took place on May 6 under the Alberta Opportunity Stream, where 832 invitations were issued. Candidates required a minimum score of 54 to be considered.
Earlier in the month, on May 1, Alberta invited 12 candidates through the Rural Renewal Stream, with a selection threshold of 50. This pathway is designed to support smaller communities facing workforce shortages.
On May 7, the province conducted a draw under the Alberta Express Entry Stream’s Accelerated Tech Pathway. A total of 146 candidates received invitations, with a minimum score of 57.
The most recent draw in this sequence occurred on May 13, when 61 invitations were issued through the Dedicated Health Care Pathway aligned with Express Entry, also requiring a score of 57.
These draws continue Alberta’s targeted approach to selecting candidates in sectors identified as priorities for 2026, including healthcare, technology, and rural workforce development.
Provincial immigration priorities and trends
Alberta has identified key sectors for immigration selection in 2026, with healthcare occupations, technology roles, and rural settlement remaining central to its strategy.
The May draws reflect this direction, as all four selection rounds were aligned with these priority areas. This targeted selection model has been consistently applied throughout the year.
Earlier draws in April 2026 show a similar pattern. On April 13, Alberta invited 62 candidates through the healthcare pathway, while a tech-focused draw on April 8 issued 146 invitations.
The Alberta Opportunity Stream has continued to dominate selection volumes. A prior April 10 draw issued 447 invitations under this stream, while the Rural Renewal Stream invited 74 candidates on April 9.
Across all draws conducted in 2026 to date, Alberta has issued at least 6,269 invitations, with the majority allocated through the Alberta Opportunity Stream.
Overview of AAIP nomination allocation
For 2026, Alberta received a total nomination allocation of 6,403 spaces from the federal government. As of May 14, the province had already used 2,191 of these allocations.
This leaves 4,212 nomination spaces remaining for the rest of the year, indicating continued capacity for additional draws in the months ahead.
The Alberta Opportunity Stream has the largest allocation at 3,425 nominations. Of these, 1,267 had been issued by mid-May, leaving 2,158 spaces available.
The Rural Renewal Stream has a total allocation of 1,000 nominations, with 367 already used. Similarly, the Accelerated Tech Pathway under Express Entry has issued 228 out of its 600 allocated spots.
Healthcare pathways, combining both Express Entry and non-Express Entry streams, have used 87 out of 500 available nominations so far.
Other streams, including tourism and hospitality, law enforcement, and entrepreneur pathways, represent smaller portions of Alberta’s overall allocation but remain active components of the program.
Application inventory and candidate pool
Alberta continues to manage a large pool of candidates through its Expression of Interest (EOI) system. As of May 14, there were 40,161 worker profiles registered in the AAIP pool.
This figure reflects a decrease of 1,602 compared to the previous update at the end of April, indicating ongoing movement through the selection system.
The Alberta Opportunity Stream accounts for the majority of candidates in the pool, with 25,571 EOIs. This underscores the stream’s role as the primary pathway for provincial immigration in Alberta.
Other streams also maintain sizable candidate pools, including 4,646 profiles under priority sector initiatives and 4,021 within the tourism and hospitality stream.
In addition to EOIs, Alberta reported 1,303 applications currently in processing across all streams. These applications represent candidates who have already received invitations and are awaiting final decisions.
Entrepreneur streams are not included within the EOI pool, as they operate under a separate selection and assessment process.
Program structure and national context
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program is part of Canada’s broader Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) framework, which allows provinces to select candidates based on regional economic needs.
AAIP includes multiple pathways, such as the Alberta Opportunity Stream, Express Entry-linked pathways, and sector-specific streams targeting healthcare and technology occupations.
Through these streams, Alberta can nominate candidates for permanent residence who meet local labour market demands and settlement criteria.
Other provinces operate similar systems under the PNP framework. For example, Manitoba manages its selection process through the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP), which also uses targeted draws and scoring systems.
Draw results and selection trends across provinces, including Alberta, are regularly tracked through official reporting and public updates, such as those compiled in the Alberta draws index.
Continued activity expected in 2026
With more than 4,000 nomination spaces still available and a large pool of candidates in its system, Alberta is expected to continue issuing invitations throughout 2026 under its existing streams.
The May draws highlight the province’s continued focus on targeted immigration aligned with sector-specific demand and regional workforce priorities.
Further draw activity and updated nomination figures are expected as Alberta progresses through its annual allocation.
Ongoing developments in provincial immigration programs, including AAIP draw results and allocation updates, remain reflected in publicly available reporting across Canada’s immigration system.
